Our Business: Developing a Premium Graphite Mine in Tanzania
Graphite is pivotal for the global shift to clean energy. Graphite’s expanding role in battery anodes for electrifying transport is driving significant short-term growth, with global demand projected to double by 2030. This surge is critical for the transition to decarbonisation, requiring a global effort to develop new infrastructure and secure reliable sources of raw materials.
Black Rock Mining Limited, in partnership with the Government of Tanzania, has formed a joint venture company, Faru Graphite Corporation, to develop the Mahenge Graphite Project which is uniquely positioned as one of the world’s largest graphite deposits.
The Mahenge Graphite Project has been recognised by the US State Department as a Minerals Securities Partnership backed project.
Mahenge Graphite Project has a diversified product mix with exposure to the high margin large flake market.
The fastest growing market for graphite is Li-ion batteries however, large flake markets are higher value and higher margin and cannot be substituted with synthetic graphite.
“The price increases with flake size”
Large flake graphite makes up 60% of Mahenge Graphite Project’s volume.

Environmental, Social and Governance
Faru Graphite Corporation has obtained all Environmental Approvals, Mining Licenses and is implementing its Resettlement Action Plan, along with a number of other significant ESG activities including:
- Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for the Project, the access roads, the electric power transmission line and the Idenke Settlement Area.
- The implementation of an Interim Livelihood Restoration Plan, including opening up new agricultural land and farming value chain training and demonstration crops for its project affected communities.
- Signing a Memorandum of Understanding for the Idenke Settlement Area with Ulanga District Council.
The Mahenge Graphite Project is construction-ready.
